Welcome to the Hill Skyhawks 2015 Cross Country Team! Here’s some important info:
Coaches Westrop and Woodward are excited to be coaching this year’s team.
Coach Westrop can be reached in Room 216A, by email at email@example.com, by phone at school at: 720-423-9718; and by cell phone (which he’ll have at all meets) at: 303-667-1842.
Coach Woodward can be reached in Room 106, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org, by phone at school at: 720-423-9751; and by cell phone (which he’ll have at all meets) at: 970-488-9176.
In order to participate, all team members must: (1) have a current physical and return a physical form (this has to be done each year) (2) provide the emergency contact form, and (3) pay the $25 athletic fee (this is due for each middle school sport a student participates in). All forms/fees can be returned to Coaches Westrop or Woodward or to Brett Champion (Room 213), Hill’s athletic director.
Runners of all abilities are welcome to be part of the team – our goal is to improve our running while having fun. All runners are expected to put in effort at practices and meets and to uphold the responsibility of representing the school at inter-school events. As noted in the player contract, all student athletes at Hill are expected to uphold at least a grade of C in every class. Runners unable to meet expectations may be asked to leave the team.
Athletic Wear and Uniforms
For practices and competitions, team members are expected to wear athletic shorts, pants or skirts, tops and running shoes. It is recommended that runners bring their own water bottle. Jewelry should not be worn for practices or competitions.
Each team member will receive a cross-country jersey. The jersey is to be worn at all competitions. It is the team member’s responsibility to care for their jersey during the season. Any team member who loses their jersey or fails to return their jersey at the end of the season will be subject to a $25 charge.
Our first team meeting will be Thursday, August 27th, from 3-3:30pm in Room 106, where we will go over expectations and answer student’s questions. Our first practice will be Monday, August 31st. The team will generally practice Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3pm until 4pm. Each team member should meet on the blacktop dressed out no later than 3pm. We expect runners to be at all practices; however, we know that conflicts arise. We ask that runners speak to us in advance if they are going to miss a practice. As DPS does not provide late busses, runners will have to make their own way home after practice (parent pick-up, walking, RTD, etc.)
Competitions (XC Meets)
The season includes a number of exciting competitions, and families are encouraged to come out and support our runners. All courses are expected to be approximately 2 miles. Our current schedule of meets is as follows. We’ll try to communicate any updated or additional information we receive (make sure we’ve got your email address!). Runners will be transported from Hill by bus. If necessary, students will be let out of 9th period in order to depart Hill on time. Announcements will be made when students are allowed to leave class. Any students not making the bus will be left behind. Students will return to Hill on the bus, unless released to parents (see below).
Hill’s Away Game/Meet Policy
Picking Up Your Student at Meet Site – Before leaving with your student, you must sign out your student with his/her coach. If your student is leaving with a different person (friend, mentor, aunt/uncle, etc.), your student must physically present a note to the coach or the parent must email the coach beforehand.
Note: If you (or someone else) are supposed to pick up your student but do not arrive before the bus leaves, we will take your student back to Hill.
Student Riding the Bus Back to Hill – Coaches will have a count of students riding the bus (based on student plans, and also who was picked up at the site), and those students will return to Hill via bus.
Bus Note: DPS Transportation manages bus arrivals and departures.
Student Pick Up at Hill – After away games/meets, you still must sign your student out with a coach after the team returns to Hill.
Students Walking Home from Hill – If you would like your student to be able to walk home after a meet (either from the meet site or from Hill), please email the coach or AD with the dates or with a “whole season permission” to walk home.
